It’s no wonder your eyes are sore.
How much time do you really spend staring at a screen?
If you’re anything like the rest of us, you likely spend as much as 11 hours a day. That’s a lot of screen time.
What About It?
Digital eye strain is a serious issue that is growing concern both in Canada and around the world.
Because we use digital screens for everything from work and entertainment to communication and education, it’s little wonder our eyes are strained.
So how does all this usage affect our eyes?
- Poor sleep. Excessive blue light from digital screens may interrupt your circadian rhythm.
- Dry eyes. Did you know that we tend not to blink as much while using a screen?
- Headaches and muscle strain. Spending long hours hunched over our phones or on our computers puts additional strain on our necks, shoulders, and backs.

There are many different strategies to cut down screen time and digital eye strain.
The most important thing you can do is remember to take regular breaks.
Following the 20-20-20 rule can help. Every 20 minutes, take a 20 second break and make sure to shift your gaze to an object that’s at least 20 feet away from you.
You may also want to consider reducing your blue light exposure either by wearing blue light filtering glasses or adjusting your screen settings.
