Myopia (nearsightedness) is a vision condition in which eyes can’t clearly focus on distant objects.
Up-close and personal, your vision is fine.
But the farther you set your sights, the more blurry your vision becomes.
Myopia is common, and it might not seem like that big of a deal.
But if it progresses unchecked, it can affect your vision, eye health, and lifestyle; and could lead to vision loss or blindness.
If your myopia is severe, your chances of developing the following eye health issues later in life also increases:
The earlier you experience myopia, the more like you are to develop the above issues, especially if your myopia is untreated.
Younger Eyes, Faster Progression
Research has shown patients who develop myopia as young children tend to experience worse myopia than patients who develop this condition as older children or adolescents.
Onset age is one of the most important factors in determining how someone’s eyes are affected later in life.
Most children who develop myopia do so during adolescence, and myopia typically stabilizes by the time they reach early adulthood.
Protection & Prevention is Easier Than You Think
There is plenty of time to take preventative measures.
- Get them outside. Playing outside benefits both the eyes and the rest of the body in many ways. Some studies have shown that increased time spent outside can slow myopia progression.
- Take regular breaks from up-close activities. This includes anything from drawing and colouring to using digital screens. While we’ll never discourage voracious bookworms, it’s important for children to take regular breaks and give their eyes a rest.
Keep in mind that there are genetic factors involved: parents with myopia often have children who go on to develop it as well.
Treatment Options for Any Age
Myopia is one of the most common eye conditions that affects kids and teenagers.
But that doesn’t mean adults shouldn’t pay attention to their own potential to develop myopia.
Whether or not you have myopia, it’s vital to undergo regular eye exams to monitor any change in the condition of your eyes.
It’s especially important for nearsighted individuals, as you may need to change your prescription frequently to continue to enjoy clear vision.
